Funded PhDs in the UK and Europe for international students
“Funded PhD” means different things in different countries. In the UK it is often a UKRI studentship with a stipend and fees. In the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway it is usually a salaried research job. Across Europe, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks advertise fixed-term doctoral posts on EURAXESS. This guide covers UKRI international eligibility, where to search (FindAPhD, jobs.ac.uk, EURAXESS), the employment model in selected European countries, typical timelines, and a practical search workflow.
UKRI studentships and international eligibility
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funds universities and other research organisations to offer doctoral studentships. You cannot apply directly to UKRI; you apply to the organisation that advertises the studentship. Full-time funding usually lasts three to four years.
On international eligibility, UKRI states that international students can usually apply, but the number of places available to international students is limited. You must be resident in the UK for the majority of your studies; time overseas should be for fieldwork or a long-term attachment. Training-grant guidance issued when the policy opened places internationally also describes a normal limit of about 30% international students on an individual doctoral training programme’s annual cohort—confirm the current rule with the programme you apply to, because local practice can vary.
According to UKRI’s support for UKRI-funded students page (updated October 2026):
- Minimum stipend from 1 October 2026: £21,805 full-time (£23,805 with London weighting). Some councils or grants pay more; EPSRC does not offer a London weighting in the same way.
- Fees: UKRI contributes up to the home fee rate (minimum fee for academic year 2026–27 listed as £5,238). International students may have to contribute to fees above that; many providers waive the gap, but it is not automatic—ask before you accept.
- Visa and IHS: UKRI funding does not pay for visas or the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Most students start in October. UKRI notes that organisations usually start the recruitment cycle about 12 months before the start date.

UKRI itself points applicants to external boards such as FindAPhD. For UK academic vacancies more broadly, use jobs.ac.uk and filter for PhD studentships or research roles. Also check:
- Doctoral landscape / focal award and Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) / Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) pages named on the UKRI studentships page
- University postgraduate funding and “funded PhD” project lists
- Supervisor-led project adverts (often with a fixed topic and methods)
Read whether the post is open to international fee status, whether the fee gap is covered, and whether a separate university application is required alongside the funding form.
PhD positions as paid employment (Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway)
In several European countries a university PhD is normally a job, not a tuition-plus-scholarship package. Salaries and benefits follow national or sector collective agreements and change over time—use the vacancy and HR page, not a blog table, as the source of record.
Netherlands
Most university doctoral candidates are employees under the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU), on salary scale P. See our detailed funded PhD in the Netherlands guide for current scale figures from university HR tables. Search AcademicTransfer, university careers sites and EURAXESS.
Sweden
Swedish higher-education law allows employment of doctoral candidates. The Higher Education Ordinance (Swedish Council for Higher Education) sets rules for doctoral studentships, including that employment is normally full-time and that duties other than the candidate’s own studies are limited. Pay is set by collective agreements and varies by university and seniority—check each advert.
Denmark
University PhD fellows are typically salaried employees under the state academic collective agreement, with a PhD-specific annex. Union guidance from DM (terms of employment for PhD students) describes fixed-term employment and duties. Exact monthly pay depends on the current agreement and seniority; universities publish local tables (for example Aarhus Arts’ English pay overview). Confirm the figure on the vacancy.
Norway
PhD candidates are commonly hired as research fellows (stipendiat) on fixed-term recruitment contracts (often three to four years). Universities such as the University of Oslo publish appointment guidelines; unions such as Forskerforbundet summarise rights for PhD candidates and postdocs. Starting pay is set by state/local agreements and can be negotiated upward—read the job notice.
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks (EURAXESS)
MSCA Doctoral Networks fund international consortia of universities, research organisations and companies to train doctoral candidates. If you want a PhD post funded by a Doctoral Network, the MSCA site says to consult open vacancies advertised internationally, including on the EURAXESS portal. Lists are updated daily. You apply directly to the institution or project, not through a single application for all MSCA networks.
Posts are usually fixed-term employment (often around 36 months of MSCA funding, depending on the grant) with mobility and eligibility rules set by the call. Always read the individual project’s requirements (degree, language, MSCA mobility rule) on EURAXESS or the network’s recruitment site.
For salary figures from the official work programme, the mobility rule in detail and a step-by-step EURAXESS search, read our Marie Curie Doctoral Networks guide.
Typical timelines
- UK UKRI / DTP studentships: recruitment often runs from about a year before an October start. Many deadlines fall between late autumn and early spring; some projects recruit later. Start dates can vary if the organisation agrees.
- NL / Nordic employment PhDs: vacancies open year-round when grants are awarded. Application windows are often a few weeks. Visa and residence-permit time should be built into the start date.
- MSCA Doctoral Networks: each network runs its own recruitment campaign (sometimes one central deadline for many posts). Watch EURAXESS and the network website.
Work backwards from the deadline: transcripts, language tests, recommendation letters, and—for the UK—Student visa and IHS budgeting if you are not a home student.
How to search (practical workflow)
- Pick the funding model you can accept (UK stipend + possible fee gap vs European employment contract vs MSCA network post).
- Set board alerts: FindAPhD and jobs.ac.uk for the UK; EURAXESS for Europe and MSCA; AcademicTransfer for the Netherlands; university career pages for your shortlist of labs.
- Filter for “funded” / “studentship” / “PhD candidate” / “doctoral student” and open the original HR page—not only the aggregator snippet.
- Check international eligibility and fee wording before investing hours in a letter.
- Track deadlines in one spreadsheet with time zones and required documents.
- Tailor each motivation letter to the project methods; see PhD motivation letter and emailing a supervisor when contact is invited.

FAQ
Can international students get a UKRI PhD studentship?
Yes. UKRI states that international students can usually apply, but the number of places available to international students is limited. You apply to the research organisation offering the studentship, not directly to UKRI. You must be resident in the UK for the majority of your studies.
What is the UKRI minimum PhD stipend from October 2026?
UKRI’s support page lists a minimum stipend of £21,805 from 1 October 2026 (£23,805 with London weighting). UKRI only contributes fees up to the home rate; international students may need to cover a fee gap unless the university waives it. UKRI funding does not pay for visas or the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Are PhDs paid jobs in the Netherlands and Nordic countries?
Usually yes at universities. In the Netherlands, doctoral candidates are typically employees under the CAO-NU salary scale P. In Sweden, doctoral candidates can be employed on a doctoral studentship under the Higher Education Ordinance. In Denmark and Norway, university PhD candidates are usually fixed-term employees (for example research fellows). Always read the vacancy for the exact contract type and pay.
What are Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks?
MSCA Doctoral Networks fund consortia that advertise PhD vacancies internationally. Candidates apply to the funded project’s open posts, which are listed on EURAXESS and updated daily. You apply directly to the host institution or project, not to a single EU form for all networks.
Where should I search for funded PhD openings?
For the UK: FindAPhD, jobs.ac.uk, and doctoral training partnership pages. For Europe: EURAXESS (including MSCA posts), university careers sites, AcademicTransfer (Netherlands), and national academic job boards. Confirm every detail on the original posting.
When do UK PhD studentship applications open?
UKRI notes that most students start in October and that organisations usually start recruitment about 12 months before the start date. Many UK studentship deadlines fall in late autumn to early spring for the following October. Project vacancies in Europe open year-round. Check each call.
