Funded PhD in the Netherlands: paid PhD positions explained

Updated 18 October 2026 · For applicants worldwide · Always confirm details on the official listing

In the Netherlands, a university PhD is usually a salaried research job. You apply to a vacancy, join a research group, and work under the national Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten, or CAO-NU). This guide explains how that employment model works, which official salary steps apply from July 2026, where to search, what timelines look like, and which documents panels expect.

How funded PhDs work in the Netherlands

Most openings are project-based: a principal investigator has grant funding and advertises one or more PhD vacancies with a defined topic, methods, and supervision team. You apply through the university’s careers portal. Selection typically includes a CV screen, interviews, and sometimes a short research presentation or writing sample.

Successful candidates receive an employment contract. That brings salary steps, holiday allowance, pension contributions, and employee rights under CAO-NU. It is a different model from countries where doctoral candidates primarily pay tuition and seek separate scholarships.

There are also scholarship or “external” PhD routes and joint master’s scholarships hosted in the Netherlands (for example Erasmus Mundus programmes). Those are not the same as a CAO-NU PhD employment contract—always read which funding type the advert describes.

Salary ranges from official CAO tables

Doctoral candidates fall under salary scale P (grades P0–P3) in the CAO-NU. Universiteiten van Nederland publishes the agreement and salary tables; individual universities mirror them on their staff sites.

Leiden University’s published table as of 1 July 2026 lists scale P as:

  • P0 — €3,204 gross per month (first 12 months)
  • P1 — €3,706
  • P2 — €3,873
  • P3 — €4,051

Amounts are gross. Net pay depends on tax and social premiums. Vacancy texts sometimes already quote the P0–P3 range so applicants can see the full trajectory.

Filter for “PhD” and read whether the post is English-speaking. Many STEM groups work in English; some roles still ask for Dutch for teaching or fieldwork.

Timelines and selection

Advertised PhD posts often close three to six weeks after publication. Structured calls and Erasmus Mundus master’s scholarships can follow an annual calendar with winter or early-spring deadlines. After interviews, HR issues a conditional offer subject to degree verification and, for non-EU applicants, a residence permit process.

Plan backwards from the contract start date. If you need an entry visa or residence permit, university HR usually sponsors the process, but document collection still takes time. Keep scanned PDFs of degrees, transcripts, and passport biodata ready.

Documents you will usually need

  • CV focused on research methods and outputs
  • Motivation letter aimed at the specific project (not a generic “why the Netherlands” essay)
  • Degree certificates and transcripts
  • Contact details for referees
  • English test results if the vacancy requires them

Writing the letter: see PhD motivation letter: structure and mistakes to avoid.

Employment PhD vs other Dutch routes

Most “PhD candidate” vacancies on university career sites are employment contracts under CAO-NU. You become staff, receive scale P salary steps, and typically have a teaching or organisational component defined locally. Separate paths include scholarship PhDs hosted by a faculty, industrial or sandwich PhDs with a company partner, and taught or research master’s programmes that are not doctorates at all.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarships hosted partly in the Netherlands (for example flood-risk or other consortia) fund a master’s, not a PhD. They can still be a useful stepping stone, but eligibility, living stipends, and deadlines follow the EMJM rules, not scale P. Keep these categories separate in your tracker so you do not prepare the wrong document set.

What selection usually includes

After the portal deadline, shortlisted candidates are often invited to one or two interviews with the supervisory team, sometimes plus a HR conversation about contract terms. You may be asked to present a paper, critique a methods section, or sketch a 6–12 month work plan. Bring clear examples of tools you have used—software, wet-lab protocols, fieldwork instruments—not only course titles.

Offers are commonly conditional on degree verification and, for candidates who need it, a successful residence-permit application. Ask early whether the start date is flexible by a few weeks if visa appointments are scarce.

Practical notes after you accept

Register with the municipality when you move, arrange Dutch health insurance within the legal deadline for employees, and keep digital copies of your contract and payslips. Your university HR or international office publishes the authoritative checklist for your campus—use that over informal forums when rules conflict.

For salary questions after hiring, the CAO text and your local HR partner are the sources of record. Public tables such as Leiden’s scale P page help you understand the offer; they do not replace the contract.

Building a Dutch application file

Keep a reusable folder with PDF exports of your CV, transcripts, degree certificates, and passport biodata page. For each vacancy, add a one-page notes file: supervisor names, methods listed in the advert, papers you will cite, and the deadline time zone. Write the motivation letter last, after you have read at least one recent paper from the group.

If the portal allows only one upload, merge files in the order the advert requests. If it asks for separate uploads, do not combine them. Name referees who can speak to research ability; warn them with the vacancy title and link the same day you submit.

    FAQ

Is a PhD in the Netherlands a paid job?

Yes, for most university doctoral candidates. Under the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO-NU), doctoral candidates are employees on salary scale P (grades P0–P3), typically on a four-year contract.

What is the PhD salary under CAO-NU from July 2026?

Leiden University publishes the CAO salary scales. As of 1 July 2026, scale P is listed as P0 €3,204, P1 €3,706, P2 €3,873 and P3 €4,051 gross per month. Confirm the exact step on your offer letter; other universities use the same national table.

    Do Dutch PhDs charge tuition?

Employed PhD candidates at Dutch universities are staff, not tuition-paying students. Separate “external” or self-funded PhD routes exist and are different—read the vacancy carefully.

    Where do I find openings?

University career portals (for example University of Twente Careers), AcademicTransfer, Euraxess, and NWO-funded project pages. FridayScout’s free weekly list also filters currently open funded posts.

How long is a standard PhD contract?

Four years is the common full-time duration under CAO-NU arrangements, sometimes with a go/no-go evaluation after the first year. Project funding can shorten or extend that—check the advert.
